A not-for-profit organization initiated by Detroit
Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick dedicated to improving
the lives of Detroit's youth by increasing participation
in after-school programs.
Through the promotion of after school program
participation to Detroit's youth, Mayor's Time
will make Detroit a healthier community to raise
children. Several studies link participation in
after-school programs to direct reductions in
youth violence, substance abuse (alcohol, drugs
and tobacco) and early sexual activity. In addition,
youth that participate in after-school programs
are more likely to attend and graduate from school,
do better in academic subject areas and increase
our children s self esteem.
Mayor's Time is funded in part by the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation and is organized as part of
a national Urban Health Initiative to improve
the health and safety in 5 cities across the United
States.
Mayor's Time does not run any after-school programs.
Instead, Mayor's Time is working to educate parents
and youth as to the benefits of after-school participation,
build partnerships with after-school program providers
to expand capacity and remove barriers to participation
in after-school programs by our kids. Mayor's
Time is also implementing an After School Investment
Strategy to acquire sustainable funding for after
school programming.
The equation is quite simple, more kids in after
school programs = a better healthier community
to raise families.
With coordination from The Skillman Foundation,
Mayor's Time has developed guidelines for parents
to gauge how well their child's after school program
is providing services and to give parents help
in choosing the appropriate after school programs
for his/her child.
The Youth Sports and Recreation Commission (YSRC),
a Mayor's Time partner, provides training in all
aspects of after school programming for local
providers. Seminars on management, grant writing,
staffing, and communications are available to
Mayor's Time providers through YSRC.
Mayor's Time has received a grant from the U.S.
Department of Education to institute a data tracking
system for students participating in after school
programs that are part of Mayor's Time. Students
will check in and our of after school programs
through swipe cards that track which programs
they attend, how long/often students attend to
be fed into a central database that will organize
and provide detailed reports on what is happening
in regards to after school programming in Detroit.
Information collected through Mayor's Time will
be used to determine the funding of new programs
in areas of Detroit that the data shows to be
under-represented as well as for grant and funding
applications. Also, Mayor's Time will provide
detailed after school activity reports to legislators,
parents and other community leaders to build and
maintain momentum in the neighborhoods and in
Lansing surrounding after school.
Evaluation of data collected by Mayor's Time will
help not only fund but also let us know where
kids are going after school and how we can help
expand capacity in some areas while changing the
scope of after school programs in other areas
based on what students want to do after school.
In short, the information we collect will only
help Mayor's Time and our after school providers
better serve our city.
