The Just Aim Motivate & Move Mission and it’s ‘projects’ are celebrating JAMM Project’s SAFE NIGHT 2006 around Metro Detroit, and the third quarter release of the new National & Community Service book entitled ‘VISTA… In Service to America’. The national campaign of the book chronicle forty years of various noteworthy accomplishments, by over 140,000 Ameri-Corps/VISTA ‘volunteers’, features long-time Detroit media personality/community activist, & JAMM Mission director Ray Wright.

This year’s JAMM Project SAFE NIGHT, in partnership with ALKEIBULAN Village, revisits Eastside Detroit, where Safe Night had its origins and greatest impact, during former Mayor Coleman Young’s administration back in 1990-94. ‘The Devil’s Night phenomenon’ was turned into ‘Angel’s Night’, by hard-working block patrols, of Eastside Detroit community organizations, dramatically halting arson, and saving millions of dollars in residential property.

SAFE NIGHT will be held Monday, Oct 30th @ Alkebulan Village, 7701 Harper off Van Dyke, 6-9pm, featuring music, skating, aerobics and dancing, video games, Male & Female responsibility sessions, conflict resolution, refreshments, special guest and much more.
For more info call 313-921-1616 or 313-834-1460.

Last November, National & Community Service sent camera crews from Hill & Knowlton, a Chicago based public relations firm, to follow Wright, only one of four Ameri-Corp members chosen to head up this year’s national campaign, around Metro Detroit, specifically, Pontiac MI, to get testimony of JAMM Projects works. The 2006 campaign called ‘Baby Boomers Get Involved’ with billboards placed in Seattle, Washington, Washington DC, combined with newspapers, and television spots running on ESPN, has featured Wright.

Born and raised in Detroit, Wright has been around the world, served honorably in the military, working in civil service, working @ WTBS & TNT Turner Broadcasting in Atlanta Ga; News Director & sports/talk show journalist with his ‘Sports Flava Experience’ programs in Detroit MI, and performing countless hours of community service, raising funding for children around Metro Detroit. Presently, Mr. Wright is working with Osborn High School through Communities In Schools’ ReaDetroit/Ameri-Corp program.

Mr. Wright is a Youth Development Specialist and has served the past decade as Male Responsibility Program spokesman @ Detroit Urban League; Community Outreach Coordinator with Family Development Center; Program Director @ Pontiac Boys & Girls Club; Community Outreach Greater Pontiac Community Coalition; Parks & Recreation Facility management-City of Pontiac MI; Public Address Announcer for Oakland County, especially Pontiac Northern High School (PNHS) for the past nine years; and host for JAMM Project’s annual Celebrity Basketball extravaganza JAMM Session. Wright presently mentors a Male Responsibility after-school program throughout Southeastern Michigan.

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS BRING DETROIT YOUTH CLOSER TO PUBLIC SAFETY CAREERS

Detroit, June 7, 2005 -- The 150 students selected to be the first summer interns in the Mayor’s Time Public Safety Academy (MTPSA) received details of the eight-week internships during an orientation program at Engine 9 Ladder 6 Fire House today. The orientation and a press conference were led by the MTPSA partners – Detroit Police, Fire, EMS Departments, Wayne County Community College District, Detroit Public Schools and Mayor’s Time. The Detroit Water Department also is participating in the summer internship program.

Selected from among well over 500 applicants, the young Detroit residents will learn some of the skills needed for entry into public safety careers. The summer internships are an addition to the Mayor’s Time Public Safety Academy, which was offered to all Detroit Public School students at either Randolph or Golightly Career and Technical Center for the first time in the 2004-2005 school year.

Students begin the three-year MTPSA curriculum in the 10th grade. Upon completion of the program, they will be on their way to careers as police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, homeland and private security officers. The also can receive 12 credits at Wayne County Community College District towards their associate’s degree.

During the school year, the approximately 60 students enrolled in the MTPSA spent half of the school day at their regular high schools, and the other half at one of the career-technical centers. A curriculum was developed collaboratively by the partners specifically for the MTPSA; several members of the police, fire and emergency medical services departments are certified teachers. In addition to learning technical skills and the culture of the public safety professions, students receive life-skills training such as health, nutrition, self-esteem, etiquette, conflict resolution, public speaking and study skills.

The Mayor’s Time Public Safety Academy summer internships are funded by a grant to Mayor’s Time by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

CONYERS, ADAMS SPOTLIGHT KIDS’ SUMMER FOOD PROGRAM

DETROIT, June 24 -- When school is out, parents of children who receive free or reduced priced lunches at school must look elsewhere for these meals. One source is the federally funded Summer Food Service Program, which provides meals to children 18 and under at parks, schools, faith-based organizations and other community sites. An average of 7,840 lunches were served to Detroit children at about 225 sites last year.

“This situation for Detroit children is critical this summer,” said Dr. Grenaé Dudley, executive director, Mayor’s Time. “Summer school programs have been dramatically reduced, further eliminating free meal sources for parents of those children.” Last summer, 20,000 children received free lunches at Detroit Public Schools.

In Detroit, Mayor’s Time, in conjunction with the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion, the Michigan Department of Education and the Skillman Foundation, has been working to increase the number of feeding sites and children participating in the program.
“Breakfast has been added for the first time in 15 years,” said Dr. Noble Maseru, Director, Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion. “This Monday, the first day of the 2005 program, nearly 50% more feeding sites served Detroit children than on the first day of the program in 2004. Even more significant, the number of lunches served on Monday was more than double the number served on last year’s first day.

“The numbers for this coming Monday are even more exciting,” Dr. Maseru noted. “But, it is important that we continue to spread the word to parents who may not be aware of this program so that all Detroit children can take advantage of these free meals offered in their neighborhoods.”

Congressman John Conyers, Jr. and Deputy Mayor Anthony Adams will join Dr. Grenaé Dudley at a Mayor’s Time Comes 2 U community picnic at newly renovated Piwok Park in Southwest Detroit. “Focus on Summer” is the theme for the picnic, which will provide information for parents about summer programs and feeding sites for children in the Cluster.
